News Feeds and RSS Help

What are News Feeds and what is RSS?

News feeds allow you to see when websites have added new items. You can get the latest headlines in one place, as soon as its published, without having to visit the websites you have taken the feed from. Feeds are also known as RSS or 'Really Simple Syndication'. In essence, the feeds themselves are just web pages, designed to be read by computers rather than people.

How do I start using feeds?

The first thing you need is something called a news reader. This is a piece of software that checks the feeds on what ever sites you have subscribed to and lets you read any new articles that have been added. There are many different versions, some of which are accessed using a browser, and some of which are downloadable programs. Browser-based news readers let you catch up with your RSS feed subscriptions from any computer, whereas downloadable applications let you store them on your main computer, in the same way that you either download your e-mail using Outlook, or keep it on a web-based service like Hotmail. Once you have chosen a news reader, all you have to do is to decide what content you want it to receive. Most websites that include RSS feeds tend to use the orange RSS symbol to show when a news feed is available.

If you click on the RSS button you can subscribe to the feed in various ways, including by dragging the URL of the feed into your news reader or by cutting and pasting the same URL into a new feed in your news reader. Most sites that offer feeds use a similar orange button, but some may just have a normal web link. Some browsers, including Firefox, Opera and Safari, automatically check for feeds for you when you visit a website, and display an icon when they find one. This can make subscribing to feeds much easier. For more details on these, please check their websites.

How do I get a news reader?

There is a range of different news readers available and new versions are appearing all the time. Different news readers work on different operating systems, so you will need to choose one that will work with your computer:

Step by step guide to getting a podcast

There are three steps involved in setting up your computer to receive podcasts (you can get any podcast as well as the GNB ones, if you use the right software, you can also sign up to podcasts for video from sites like the BBC Video site for example).

1. Get some podcast software

You need to install a piece of software which you can setup to check each site that you want to get podcasts from, it will then find the latest episode and automatically deliver it to your computer.

This software is usually free, and popular choices are:

Good News Broadcasting is not responsible for the content of external websites (we also recommend you always read the set-up and help guides for new software and if viewing this at work, make sure your Company's IT policy allows you to install such software).

2. Subscribe to podcasts

Once you have the software installed you can then subscribe to some podcasts.

How you do this will vary depending on which software you have chosen.

Here is a rough guide to how this might work:

If you have iTunes

You can subscribe to some podcasts through the iTunes Podcast Directory.

If you can't find the podcast that you want in iTunes then you can follow the same method as outlined below for Juice, Doppler and other podcast software.

If you have Juice, Doppler or other podcast software

If you have Juice, Doppler or another piece of software then this is likely to be the method you will need to follow.

This is also the case if you can't find the podcast you want in iTunes. In all of these cases you need to add the "feed" of the podcast to your software. The feed is really just the address of the podcast, which the software will go to each time it wants to check for a new episode.

You can find the feed for any GNB podcast by clicking on the yellow Podcast button. The feed address will appear in the address bar of your internet browser. It will start with http://gnba.gospelcom.net/rss/... and will end in .xml

You will need to copy this feed address and paste it into your podcast software. How you do this will depend on your software, but you should look out for buttons or links that say "Add" or "Subscribe".

3. Listen to podcast contents

When a new episode becomes available for the podcast you have subscribed to, your software will automatically download it. For audio, you can then listen to this episode on your computer or transfer it to your portable player to listen to later.

Note that for video (not available from GNB), the episode should play on your computer but will only play on certain portable players and mobile phones (the video is often in mp4 format). Please check with the manufacturer of your device and the source of the information.

You may want to check the settings of your podcast software for details including:

  • how often it will check for new episodes,
  • whether it will keep old episodes for you,
  • whether it will download all new episodes found or only the latest
  • etc.

This will vary depending on the software you have chosen, and your personal preferences.

As a general rule GNB programme files will be made available on a basis that matches the update frequency of the program i.e. once a month or once a week. Although we will make every effort to maintain the podcast site, delivery of programs to radio stations will always take first priority and the published update frequency may not always be met. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience that may cause.

If you decide that you no longer want to receive podcast episodes then it should be very easy to unsubscribe. Again, how you do this will depend on your software, but you should look for "Clear" or "Unsubscribe" options.
